"Historic Edenton is located on the Albermarle Sound in the state of North Carolina. Today's thriving community, situated on the Sound's Edenton Bay, was first laid out as a town-site in 1712. The settlement was incorporated in 1722 making it the second oldest community in North Carolina. Edenton's golden age fell in the decades preceding the Revolutionary War when its docks were bustling with ships from the West Indies, Africa, England and the Colonies. As other ports developed, Edenton became a quiet backwater community, a fact that probably attributed to most of the town's historic buildings being saved from the ravages of twentieth century development.
Today, Edenton enjoys the status as one of the most architecturally intact historic towns on the eastern seaboard of North Carolina. Its buildings include examples of Jacobean, Georgian, Federal, Greek Revival and Victorian architectural styles. With its built heritage, beautiful gardens, vibrant main street and friendly folk, this gem called Edenton is indeed worth a visit, especially in the spring when dogwood, wisteria and azalea turn the community into a true Garden of Eden."
